Robert Florey’s Murders in the Rue Morgue, loosely adapted from the story by Edgar Allan Poe, is a dark exploration of the relationship between human and beast. Evil scientist Dr Mirakle (Bela Lugosi, fresh from his celebrated 1931 portrayal of Dracula) is conducting crude experiments in his attempt to prove the truth of Darwinian theories. He presents his pet ape as the missing link in the evolution of humankind at a sideshow, and identifies female victims for his gruesome experiments. In the extraordinary finale, the maddened ape carries his female victim over Parisian rooftops. With sets that loom over the cast and dramatic extremes of lighting, Murders in the Rue Morgue owes much to German expressionist cinema.
